ActiveCampaign Is Not Sending Emails: 4 Fixes You Can Try Today
ActiveCampaign Is Not Sending Emails: 4 Fixes You Can Try Today
Why Your ActiveCampaign Emails Aren’t Sending
There’s nothing worse than realizing new contacts are not receiving your emails, especially when they’ve just joined your list, downloaded your lead magnet, or made a purchase.
When automated emails stop working, it’s not only frustrating, it can cost you customers, revenue, and trust.
The good news is that most sending issues are easy to resolve once you know where to look.
As someone who’s worked with ActiveCampaign for years, I’ve seen almost every scenario imaginable — from misconfigured automations to simple user errors that cause big headaches. Below, I’ll walk you through the four most common causes and how to fix them step-by-step so you can get your campaigns running again.
Before We Begin
If you don’t have ActiveCampaign yet, it’s a great time to get started. You can create your free trial here so you can follow along with each step as we go.

In this video, I break down each step visually and show how to troubleshoot automation issues inside ActiveCampaign.
If you prefer to follow along visually or you’re new to automations, this video will make the process much easier to understand.
1. Check If the Email Is Still in Draft Mode
Sometimes the simplest issues cause the biggest problems.
If your email still shows as “Draft,” ActiveCampaign will not send it, even if your automation looks perfect from the outside. A drafted email is one that hasn’t been fully completed or marked active, which means the system treats it as unfinished content.
Here’s how to check:
- Open your automation and look for any emails marked with “Draft.”
- Click into the editor and complete the setup process.
- Make sure to save and mark the email as “Active” before exiting.
Pro Tip:
Always send yourself a test email before turning an automation live. It’s the quickest way to spot missing content, broken personalization, or incorrect links before your subscribers do.
You’d be surprised how many automation issues come down to one email never being marked as active.
2. Make Sure the Automation Isn’t Paused
If your automation is paused, no new contacts will enter it, meaning no emails will be sent.
It sounds basic, but many marketers pause automations temporarily during testing and forget to re-enable them before going live. This small mistake can completely block an entire sequence.
To check:
- Go to your Automations dashboard.
- If the automation says “Paused,” click “Active.”
Once you reactivate it, remember that ActiveCampaign will not automatically add contacts who should have entered while it was paused.
If you need those people to receive emails, you’ll need to manually re-add them using the “Add to Automation” option under each contact record. This ensures no leads or customers fall through the cracks while your system is catching up.
Example:
If a contact was supposed to enter the automation after receiving a tag, but the automation was paused, you’ll need to manually add that contact back once it’s active again.
It might seem tedious, but it’s one of those quick fixes that can immediately restore your automated follow-ups.
3. Verify the Contact’s Email Address
This one happens more often than you might think.
If a customer says they didn’t receive an email, check for a misspelled address before assuming the system is broken. Even the most sophisticated automation can’t deliver to a bad email. You’d be surprised how often people type things like:
- @gmsil.com
- .con
- name@gnail.com
How to check:
- Search for the contact in ActiveCampaign using their name or email.
- Correct any typos manually or ask the subscriber to rejoin using the correct address.
Pro Tip:
Always use a confirmation email or double opt-in to ensure valid addresses and prevent fake signups.
This not only protects your deliverability but also helps maintain a clean, healthy list that improves engagement rates and sender reputation.
When in doubt, verify the contact details before diving into technical troubleshooting.
4. Check If the Contact Is Unsubscribed or on the Exclusion List
If a contact unsubscribes, they are automatically excluded from all future emails, including automations.
But there’s a difference between a normal unsubscribe and being on the Exclusion List, and it’s important to understand both. The exclusion list is more restrictive and can block any attempts to send future messages unless proper steps are taken.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Unsubscribed contacts: They can resubscribe using your form, or you can manually change their list status.
- Exclusion list contacts: They have either manually unsubscribed from all, or marked your email as spam.
If someone clicked “Unsubscribe All,” you can remove them from the exclusion list yourself.
If they marked your email as spam, ActiveCampaign requires written consent from the contact before reinstating them. You’ll need to send that proof to their support team, as ActiveCampaign treats spam reports very seriously.
To prevent future issues:
- Send valuable, expected content that subscribers genuinely want to receive.
- Clean your list regularly to remove inactive or bounced addresses.
- Let subscribers choose what type of emails they prefer, such as newsletters, promotions, or educational content.
The more control you give your subscribers, the less likely they are to hit “unsubscribe” or “report spam.”

Final Thoughts: Troubleshoot Smart and Stay Consistent
Email automations are powerful tools that can completely transform how your business communicates with customers.
But even small setup mistakes can cause major issues if they go unnoticed. By checking these four areas — draft status, paused automations, typos, and exclusion lists — you can solve almost all ActiveCampaign email-sending problems and get your workflows running smoothly again.
If you’ve gone through these steps and your emails are still not sending, it might be time to get a professional review.
Having a fresh set of eyes on your automation setup can often uncover small details that make a big difference in performance.
